All in a row at the NYYC Invitational CupA colorful first year for the NYYC Invitational CupNo one knew quite what to expect when the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) invited 19 yacht club teams from 14 nations to compete in the first-ever Invitational Cup in September of 2009. With the future unsure for the America’s Cup, the media embraced this international competition among amateur sailors aboard one-design NYYC Swan 42s. MEDIA PRO teamed with the NYYC to coordinate global communications efforts, while affiliate Suma Events helped manage sponsorships from Sperry Top-Sider, Nautor’s Swan and Rolex Watch, U.S.A. A one-hour special, produced by Gary Jobson, aired on ESPN2, while print features appeared around the world in such publications as Afloat (Ireland), Kazi (Japan), Sailing (USA), Sailing World (an official media partner), Vela e Regate (ITA), and Yachtstyle (Asia). Among the radio placements were interviews on WXXI AM NPR and Solent H2O with renowned host Sir Robin Knox Johnston. Hometown newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle and Royal Gazette (Bermuda) also jumped on the reporting opportunities.

Rhode Island´s Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry arrives in NewportWhen the 132-foot hull of Newport's Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry was towed by tug from its summer berth in Newport Harbor to Providence for structural work at Promet Marine, MEDIA PRO once again kept the media abreast of the project’s development, coordinating with renowned photographer Onne van der Wal to document the move and distribute images. In October of 2008, after the non-profit group Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI) purchased the ship for pennies on the dollar from a Canadian group, they asked MEDIA PRO to manage a long-term press effort to cultivate public support and see the ship through to its completion in 2011, when it will be re-introduced as a 207-foot, three-masted square-rigged Class A Tall Ship – a 21st Century version of the naval vessels used in the Battle of Lake Erie, where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry commanded a victorious fleet. With $1.6 million in financial support raised thus far, the media support has been generous as well, with nationally distributed coverage by the Associated Press and independent features appearing in The New York Times, Windsor Star (CAN), Providence Journal, Newport Daily News and on CBC Radio (CAN) and WADK (R.I.).

You're the one behind the words (for the Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship), and it was easy to recognize your creative quotes and positive spin! Thank you for being an unsung heroine!

Kate Karshick, Event Registrar, Rochester Yacht Club

It was great working with you on one more Rolex Big Boat Series edition and you did a tremendous job in leading and coordinating photography, video and PR to service Rolex and the yacht club.
